Captain-terr zee Koopman commanded the Dutch naval squadron that provided gunfire support for the marine landing on 5 April 1873. His fleet, consisting of the warships Antwerpen, Marnix, Soerabaja, and Sumatra, opened fire at 6 o’clock morning on the landing beaches, suppressing Acehnese positions and allowing the marine companies to disembark with minimal opposition.
Koopman’s coordination with the land forces under General-Major Köhler and Captain-terr zee Binkes was praised in contemporary dispatches for its effectiveness.
