Captain-terr zee Binkes was the Dutch naval officer appointed commander of the combined marine‑landing division during the 1873 Aceh expedition. He led the first landing on 5 April 1873 and later took command of the Mesigit building after it was seized by Dutch forces on 14 April 1873.
Binkes worked closely with the marine lieutenant C. J. Visser and was noted for his “common sense” and humor, traits that helped ease tensions between the marine troops and the regular army. After the Mesigit was retaken by Acehnese fighters, Binkes reported the untenable situation to Köhler, who ordered the troops to withdraw to a more defensible position.

- Directed the landing of two marine companies equipped with Beaumont and Snider rifles.
- Coordinated naval gunfire support from the warships Antwerpen, Marnix, Soerabaja, and Sumatra.
- Oversaw the evacuation of the Mesigit under fire on 14 April 1873.
