Colonel C. A. de Brauw served as the chief of staff of the Dutch expeditionary force during the third Bali campaign of 1849 (page 107). He commanded the VII battalion, later reinforced with three companies of the VIII battalion, and executed a flanking maneuver through the steep, rocky gorge of the Sangsit‑ravijj that turned the battle at Djagaraga in the Dutch favour (page 107).
Tactical Achievement
De Brauw’s surprise attack on the enemy’s flank, despite the difficult terrain, forced the Balinese defenders to retreat and allowed the main Dutch column, under Lieutenant‑colonel Van Swieten, to resume the offensive (page 107). His actions were later praised as one of the most daring feats in the annals of the Indische Leger (page 107).
Recognition
Following the campaign, De Brauw received a royal distinction under the Koninklijk Besluit of 11 December 1849 (page 108).
