Alexander was the second mate of the steamer Raijah, killed on the bridge on the night of 20 July 1893 during the seizure of the ship off the north coast of Atjeh.
P. H. R. Beuming records that after the pirates had killed the helmsman with a rentjong, daarop snelden de bandieten naar de brug en overvielen den tweeden stuurman, den heer Alexander, die de wacht had; ook hij werd na een kort handgemeen afgemaakt — the bandits then hurried to the bridge and fell upon the second mate, Mr. Alexander, who had the watch; he too was despatched after a short hand-to-hand struggle. There followed the general massacre in which the captain also died of two stab wounds.
