A celebrated Shattarite mystic teacher who flourished in Medina in the 17th century, dying after 1661. Deeply influenced by Indian mysticism, he founded the Shattariyyah tariqah and, through his many disciples, became enormously influential across the Indonesian archipelago. His most zealous pupil was the Acehnese saint Abdurra’uf of Singkel, through whom innumerable spiritual genealogies in the archipelago trace back to him.
