Abraha was a 6th-century Aksumite (Abyssinian) governor of Yemen in the early sixth century CE, famed in Islamic tradition for his failed expedition against the Kaʿba in Mecca in the Year of the Elephant — traditionally dated to 570, the year of the Prophet Muhammad’s birth. Although not directly an Acehnese figure, his story entered Acehnese Islamic literature through the 16th-century Malay translation of the Burda of Al-Busiri and is invoked there as a metaphor for the forces opposed to the prophetic mission.
Historical Background
Abraha’s campaign against Mecca is narrated in the Qur’an in the Sūra al-Fīl — the “Chapter of the Elephant”, Sūra 105 of the Qur’an — and in later Malay-Acehnese chronicles. The DLP-54 manuscript of the Malay Burda translation notes on its page 83:
“Bedoeld is de Abessijnse heerser Abraha uit Zuid-Arabie, die een expeditie naar Mekka op touw zou hebben gezet, volgens de legende in het jaar waarin de profeet Muhammad geboren werd, 570.”
That is: “The reference is to the Abyssinian ruler Abraha of South Arabia, who is said to have mounted an expedition against Mecca, according to legend in the year in which the Prophet Muhammad was born, 570.”
Appearance in the Burda
Verses 71–73 of the Malay text of the Burda reference “the army of the unbeliever that the messenger struck with pebbles” — a traditional allusion to Abraha’s failed expedition against the Kaʿba. The poem likens the kāfir (unbeliever) to “the army of the unbeliever that was pelted with stones by the messenger”. The story, well-known in Islamic tradition, is invoked in the Burda as a metaphor for divine intervention against hostile forces.
Relevance to Aceh
Abraha’s story entered Acehnese Islamic literature through the Malay Burda translation preserved in DLP-54 and is recited in sermons (khutbah) as an example of divine intervention. The analogy served Acehnese poets to frame contemporary conflicts with colonial powers as a continuation of the historic struggle between true believers and hostile forces.
