Aartshertog Albert van Oostenrijk (Archduke Albert of Austria) was an Austrian field marshal and victor of the Battle of Custozza, whose 1868 military predictions regarding modern telegraphy were cited in Dutch analyses of the Aceh War.
Prediction on Telegraphy and Military Command
In his 1876 treatise Atjeh gedurende de tweede expeditie en later, the anonymous author cited Archduke Albert’s 1868 writings predicting that future military commanders would be judged more harshly than ever before due to the telegraph (Telegraph Communication in the Aceh War) and daily newspaper reporting.
The author applied Albert’s thesis to the Aceh War, showing how instant telegraphic dispatches (General van Swieten War Telegrams) subjected General J. van Swieten to premature public condemnation in Batavia and Europe.
