A. W. K. ter Beek was a Dutch writer on colonial-military affairs who authored De vier eerste jaren van den Atjeh-oorlog (The first four years of the Aceh War), published at The Hague by Gebroeders van Cleef. The work was one of the secondary sources used by Brooshooft in compiling his Brooshooft (1886) of the Atjeh War published at Utrecht in 1886.
Work
Ter Beek’s book treated the opening phase of the Aceh War from the outbreak of hostilities in 1873 through the first four years of campaigning. In Brooshooft’s judgement it belonged, together with the pamphlet literature of van Swieten, Verspick, Verstege and others, to the category of works that treated “only short periods or fragments of the war,” and which therefore could not by themselves give the Dutch public the comprehensive and affordable overview that Brooshooft set out to provide.
