A. Smit was a Corporal der mariniers who fell during the 30 March 1893 assault on a redoute on the Tamiang river. His death, together with that of Viergever (corporal), is noted in the Dutch naval yearbook of 1893.
Significance
His sacrifice underscores the fierce resistance encountered by Dutch forces in the interior of Aceh.
