Description
Founded in 1925 in old barracks (under Dr. van Heuvel). Directors: Dr. J. A. Latumeten (1926-1935), Dr. J. A. Lichtveld (from 1935). Now ~1400 patients including 548 Atjehers, 23 Gajo’s, 2 Alassers, 79 Javanen, 41 Chineezen, plus 652 from outside the residency. Staff of 248 including 11 Europeans. Work-therapy: weaving, rotan/timber, bookbinding, agriculture (coconut). Few or no dwangmiddelen (coercive measures). Some patients walk freely in Sabang.
