The Council of Eight (Raad van Achten) was an influential political and diplomatic committee formed in Penang by Acehnese noblemen and merchants following the First Aceh Expedition in 1873.
Function and Impact
Comprising eight prominent Acehnese representatives residing in British Penang, the Council organized arms and gunpowder procurement, managed contraband shipments past Dutch naval blockades, published news reports supporting the Sultanate of Aceh, and coordinated overseas diplomatic appeals to maintain Acehnese resistance against Dutch invasion.
