Tuchtiging der Aroe‑cilanden (1893) was a Dutch marine punitive expedition against the Aroe Islands (Arú Archipelago) in response to a local rebellion that threatened Dutch maritime interests near Atjeh. Conducted in 1893, the operation was part of the broader Dutch campaign to secure the eastern approaches of the Aceh sultanate.
The expedition deployed a detachment of the Dutch Marine Corps aboard the warship HNLMS Koningin Wilhelmina, which bombarded rebel positions before landing troops to raze fortified villages and install a compliant local authority.
Significance
The action demonstrated the Dutch willingness to project force beyond the immediate coastline of Atjeh, extending their control over the surrounding maritime region.
