In 1918, civil administration was returned to a civilian (non-military) official. Practically all of Atjeh had by then developed growing trust in the honest intentions of the formerly hated Dutch intruder. The Acehnese now travel freely through their great land, trade, and can keep what they earn; find work with the Gouvernement and on private large-scale agricultural enterprises (grootlandbouwbedrijf) founded in later years.
