Treaty of Münster (1648) was the peace agreement that concluded the Eighty Years’ War between the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) and Spain, formally recognising Dutch independence. The treaty’s end of hostilities allowed the Republic to redirect military resources toward overseas expansion, notably strengthening the VOC presence in the Sultanate of Aceh.
Consequences for Aceh
With the cessation of European war in Europe, the VOC could increase its fleet size and protect its trading posts on the Aceh coast, facilitating the flow of pepper and other commodities to Europe.
