Literatuur-Overzicht over het jaar 1939 van de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde en Geschiedenis van Nederlandsch-Indië — “Literature Survey for the year 1939 of the Philology, Geography, Ethnology, and History of the Netherlands Indies” — is the fourth annual (4e jaarlijksche) literature survey compiled by H. van Meurs, published in ‘s-Gravenhage (The Hague) in 1940 by M. Nijhoff on behalf of the Koninklijke Vereeniging Koloniaal Instituut. The bibliography records some 1,100 literature numbers (rising from c. 800 in the preceding volume) drawn from c. 270 periodicals, and its Sumatra chapter (Hoofdstuk III, Nos. 548–658) — together with the Sumatra Addenda (Nos. 1056–1062) — is a major source for the 1939 state of scholarship on Atjeh, including the Atjeh-oorlog, the Padrie-oorlog, the van Daalen campaign of 1904, the Damsté edition of the Hikajat Eitia Toedjoh, and the third centenary of the Atjeh martyrs.
Publication and structure
The work was issued as a separately bound pamphlet in 1940 by M. Nijhoff of ‘s-Gravenhage, bearing the shelfmark D 2406 D 2706 1939 and the Prov. Bibl. Friesland mark 0290 3699. In his Voorbericht (foreword), Van Meurs records that the Koninklijk Instituut — “in de overtuiging, dat de bijzondere tijdsomstandigheden niet den minsten ongunstigen invloed mochten uitoefenen op het verschijnen van deze publicatie” — issued the volume notwithstanding the wartime conditions of 1940, holding that the survey “als het ware een exponent is van de groote beteekenis van Nederland-Overzee.” The 1939 survey was already significantly larger than its two predecessors: c. 70 additional periodicals had been consulted, bringing the total to 270, while the number of literature entries rose from c. 800 to nearly 1,100.
The bibliography is organised into eight regional chapters — Algemeen (general, Nos. 1–423), Java en Madoera (Nos. 424–547), Sumatra en naburig gebied (Nos. 548–658), Borneo (Nos. 659–683), Celebes en de Molukken (Nos. 684–726), Nieuw-Guinea (Nos. 727–802), Kleine Soenda-eilanden (Nos. 803–872), and West-Indië (Nos. 873–997) — followed by Addenda (Nos. 998–1080) and a Bijlage (appendix) on the Institute itself. Entries marked with an asterisk (*) before the title are those judged relevant to the Netherlands Indies but without direct connection to it. The Algemeen chapter likewise contains Atjeh-related material: the Encyclopaedie van Nederlandsch-Indië supplement (No. 89) records entries for Atjeh and Koetaradja (Aflevering 58, pp. 1825–1856), and the Volhard cannibalism study (No. 361) lists Atjeh among the Sumatran peoples treated.
Method and scope
Van Meurs states in his Voorbericht that “er is bij de samenstelling naar volledigheid gestreefd, met vermijding nochtans van overlading” — completeness was sought, while avoiding overloading. Several literature numbers from the preceding year that had not been recorded in the previous survey were included retrospectively, “gelijk reeds eerder werd gedaan.” Entries relevant to the Netherlands Indies but without direct connection to it were marked with an asterisk. Even publications not strictly belonging to the fields of philology, geography, ethnology, and history of the Netherlands Indies were included when they could, “hetzij door inhoud, hetzij door illustratieve documentatie, bijdragen tot de kennis van land en volk” — whether by content or by illustrative documentation, contribute to the knowledge of land and people. For this reason even Indische sketches and novels (Indische schetsen en romans) were not left unmentioned.
The survey was compiled with extensive use of the richly-stocked Koloniale Bibliotheek (Colonial Library) of the Koninklijk Instituut at ‘s-Gravenhage, which was continuously expanded with the latest colonial literature. Van Meurs invited authors and publishers to deposit a copy of every work of colonial importance with the Colonial Library, so that it might “komen zoodoende onder veler oogen en tegelijk wordt de totstandkoming van een zoo volledig en nauwkeurig mogelijk Literatuur-Overzicht bevorderd” — come under many eyes and at the same time promote the compilation of a survey as complete and accurate as possible.
Significance
For AcehWiki, the Literatuur-Overzicht over het jaar 1939 is significant as the principal bibliographic record of the 1939 state of scholarship on Atjeh — a year that saw the death of the ex-pretender Sultan Toeanangkoe Mohammad Dawat (No. 563), the third centenary of the Atjeh martyrs (Nos. 581, 1059), the publication of Damsté’s edition of the Seven Sleepers legend in Atjehsch (Nos. 560, 570), and of Jongejans’s survey Land en volk van Atjeh vroeger en nu (No. 571). The survey is the source for every entry in this corpus that draws on Van Meurs, and it furnishes the bibliographic coordinates by which the 1939 Atjeh scholarship may be located within the wider landscape of Netherlands Indies philology, geography, ethnology, and history.
