Acehnese associations ‘Sarikat Atjeh’ and somewhat later ‘Sama mendjadi satoe’ were founded in earlier years. The then-governors put considerable effort into them and strongly encouraged the youth movement that gave the impetus for their founding. All that survives now is a bundle of yellowed letters in the archive — i.e., the associations came to nothing, illustrative of the Acehnese individualism that resists collective organization.
Significance
The event is recorded by Jongejan as part of the broader historical narrative of Aceh and the Atjeh conflict period. It illustrates the complex interplay of local Atjehers politics, Dutch colonial administration, and the religious and military leadership that shaped the region’s history.
