The Capture of Kota Goenoengan occurred on 12 January 1874 when Dutch forces under Colonel K. Schultze stormed the western redoute complex protecting the Kraton of Aceh.
Detailed Narrative
On 11 January 1874, intelligence from Teuku Nja alerted General Jan van Swieten that Tuanku Hashim was mounting heavy artillery at Kota Goenoengan to flank Dutch positions at Mesjid Raya Aceh.
At 5:00 AM on 12 January 1874, Colonel Schultze marched with two half-battalions, mountain guns, and sappers toward Kota Rentang. Deploying artillery 200 meters from the enemy lines, the 9th Battalion executed a left-flank movement through jungle thickets, forcing Acehnese defenders out of Kota Rentang.
Continuing the advance, Schultze’s troops reached Kota Goenoengan at 11:30 AM. Sappers cut openings through thorn hedges, enabling two infantry columns to storm the fort at noon. The capture of Kota Goenoengan eliminated the western defense sector of the royal palace, paving the way for the final assault on the Kraton of Aceh.
