The Assembly of the auxiliary troops at Masdjid Siem on 2 November 1893 gathered some 2,400 Achehnese auxiliaries under the leadership of Toekoe Djohan and at Dutch expense, to drive the Sabil bands out of the XXVI Moekims of Groot-Atjeh.
The gathering
Hooijer recorded that beneath the trees of the terrain around Masdjid Siem — the wide fields overgrown with coconut palms, the kampongs (villages) closed off by hedges of areca and thorn — verzamelden zich den 2den November ongeveer 2400 man onzer hulptroepen, die onder Toekoe Djohan’s leiding en op onze kosten de Sabilbenden uit de XXVI Moekims zouden verjagen.
Terms of service
It was arranged that when this had been accomplished, Oemar and his fighters would maintain order in the district, again against a fixed salary; and that should he fall, he would be succeeded in the command of his fighting force by his brother and by the bravest of his officers.
Outcome
Boven verwachting ontmoette hij weinig tegenstand en leed hij weinig verlies — beyond expectation he met little resistance and suffered little loss. His success was great, and when he later took a couple of days’ rest from fighting, the Dutch made it easier for him to resume by complying with his request to send troops to the terrain he had conquered at Tjot Rang. Thus covered, he was able in the following days to disperse Mad Amin’s bands entirely.
