The Treaty of Commerce and Friendship (1857) was a bilateral agreement concluded in 1857 between Major-General Jan van Swieten (Governor of Sumatra’s West Coast) and Sultan of Aceh.
Provisions
The treaty established peaceful commercial relations and mutual recognition, with both parties renouncing all prior territorial claims made before 1857. Relations deteriorated in 1858 when the Netherlands concluded a treaty with the Sultan of Siak, prompting protests from the Sultan of Aceh, who claimed Siak as a vassal state.
