The wali was the guardian under Islamic law who, in Atjeh, acted for a woman in matters of marriage and property. In the context of Atjehnese land law, the wali appears as the person who — whether the father himself or another guardian — made over the atra peunoelang to a married daughter or ward on the occasion of the birth of her first child, the gift usually consisting of a rice field and a head of plough cattle.
