The Tjhi — also written tjhi, short for keutihi (pronounced ketjhi) — was an Atjehnese title borne by the oeléebalangs, especially those who from of old had been the military commanders of their landschappen and were now the administrators and judges over their people. The title is added to the personal name, as in Teukoe Tjhi Perlak, Teukoe Tjhi Peusangan, Teukoe Tjhi Mohamad Thajeb. The word keutihi means oud — old — and the title thus designates the seniority of the bearer.
