Teukoe was the Acehnese title of a secular chief or nobleman, abbreviated T..
The title is borne by the great secular figures of du Croo’s narrative: Teukoe Oemar, T. Tjhi’ Toenòng, T. Radja Sabi, T. Dagang, T. Radja Tampo’, Teukoe Mamat, T. Béntara Titeuë, T. Bén Blang Pidië and T. Tjhi’ Moehammad Djohan Alamsjah. H. N. A. Swart habitually addressed a chief with the words “And, Teukoe, is all well?” — the peculiarity of the little word “en” that so puzzled the chiefs of Tangsé that they asked H. J. Schmidt whether the Governor was angry.
