Sisal (Aceh) (Dutch: sisal, Latin: Agave sisalana) was the strong, pale fibre extracted from the fleshy leaves of the Agave sisalana plant cultivated experimentally and commercially in the residency of Atjeh in the early twentieth century, one of three major world suppliers alongside Mexico, Tanganyika and Java. The agave leaf provided strong fibres after a mechanical decortication process (Dutch: kneuzingsproces) removed the surrounding pulp, and the resulting sisal fibre (Dutch: sisalvezel) was bundled for export or twisted into sisal rope (Dutch: sisaltouw) for the European cordage and twine trade. Sisal contributed to the export economy of Atjeh through the 1910s and 1920s, with fibres shipped to Europe and used in rope-making, textiles, and other industrial applications.
The agave plant and its introduction
The Agave sisalana — a succulent of the family Asparagaceae, native to the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico — was introduced to the Netherlands Indies in the late nineteenth century as a potential fibre crop for the dry, marginal lands of the eastern islands. The plant’s tolerance of poor soils, drought, and high temperatures made it attractive to colonial agronomists searching for a fibre crop that could be grown on land too poor for cotton, and experimental plantings were established on Java, on the East Coast of Sumatra, and in the drier lowlands of the Atjeh Tamiang district in the early 1900s.
The plant grows as a rosette of thick, fleshy, sword-shaped leaves up to 1.5 metres in length, reaching commercial bearing at three to four years of age and continuing to yield for seven to ten years. Each plant produces annually 25 to 40 leaves, each containing approximately 1,000 to 1,200 fibres embedded in a matrix of pulpy parenchyma tissue. The fibre content of the leaf is about 4 per cent by weight, the rest being water and pulp that must be removed by decortication.
Production process
Leaves were cut from the plant by hand using a sharp sickle (Dutch: sikkel) at the base of the leaf, bundled, and fed through the Jacobsladders — inclined conveyor chains (Dutch: jakobslederen) that drew the leaves into the decortication machine (Dutch: decorticator). The decorticator consisted of a pair of counter-rotating fluted rollers that crushed the leaf against a blunt blade, scraping away the soft pulp (Dutch: pulp) while the long, tough fibres passed through unaffected. The crude fibre emerging from the machine was then washed in running water to remove the residual mucilage, hung on long lines in the sun to dry and bleach, brushed to separate the individual fibres, and finally graded and baled for export.
The resulting fibre was a pale, lustrous, slightly waxy strand of 0.8 to 1.5 metres in length, strong, resistant to salt-water deterioration, and capable of being spun into yarn or twisted into rope. The principal commercial products were:
- Bundled sisal fibres (Dutch: bundel sisalvezels): the raw fibre baled for export, principally to the cordage mills of the Netherlands and Great Britain.
- Sisal rope (Dutch: sisaltouw): thin and thick rope, manufactured either at the estate’s own rope-walk or at the cordage mills of Batavia, used for shipping cordage, agricultural binder twine, and a wide range of industrial and domestic applications.
Economic role and global context
Sisal contributed to the export economy of Atjeh through the 1910s and 1920s, with fibres shipped to Europe and used in rope-making, textiles, and other industrial applications. The crop was one of three major world suppliers alongside Mexico, Tanganyika, and Java: Mexico, the original centre of production, dominated the world market until the Mexican revolution of 1910 disrupted the henequen trade; Tanganyika, under German and then British colonial rule, expanded rapidly in the 1920s to become the world’s largest producer; Java was the principal Asian producer; and Atjeh was a small but significant adjunct to the Java trade.
The Atjeh sisal trade was overshadowed in the 1930s by the expansion of the East African estates and by competition from synthetic fibres — particularly nylon, which began to displace sisal from the cordage market in the late 1930s. The depression-driven collapse of agricultural prices hit the Atjeh sisal estates hard, and most were abandoned or converted to other crops by the end of the decade. The sisal trade of Atjeh was a brief but characteristic episode in the broader story of colonial experimentation with fibre crops, and its decline illustrates the vulnerability of single-purpose plantation agriculture to competition from both lower-cost producers and synthetic substitutes.
Decline and legacy
By the 1930s sisal had ceased to be a significant Atjeh export. The surviving smallholder plantings were largely abandoned during the Japanese occupation of 1942 and the Indonesian revolution, and the Agave sisalana has since naturalised in parts of the Atjeh lowland without forming the basis of any commercial crop. The story of sisal in Atjeh is a reminder of the diversity of the experimental crops tried by colonial agronomists in the early twentieth century — most of which, like sisal, were unable to compete with the great plantation staples of rubber, palm oil, and coffee.
