Sajet — the Atjehnese form of the Arabic sayyid (also sajjid) — is the title borne by those who claim descent from the Prophet Muhammad. As Snouck Hurgronje notes, the sajets ‘hadden godsdienstigen adel en grooten invloed’ — possessed religious nobility and great influence. In Atjeh, the older Teungkoe of those who claim sajet ancestry is replaced by habib — beloved — as in the name of Teungkoe habib Moehamat bin Sajet Oesoeih of Peudawa Rajeu.
