The peutoeha parang, also called peutoeha djaga, was the overseer employed by a peutoeha pangkaj in the Atjehnese pepper economy, through whom planters were enrolled and advances disbursed.
Functions
An aspirant planter might report either directly to the capitalist contractor or to one of his overseers, and be enrolled orally as an aneu’ seuneubô. The advance — padi, clothing, tools and cash — was then handed over through the peutoeha djaga.
Remuneration
The overseer’s honorarium was originally included in the wathé pangkaj of one-tenth of the harvest. Under the fixed tariff later introduced by the administration, in consequence of disputes arising among others between peutoeha pangkaj and peutoeha parang, the aneu’ seuneubô rendered fifty cents per picol as wathé peutoeha, also called wathé parang, in addition to one guilder per picol as wathé pangkaj.
