Koran-onderwijs (English: “Koranic education”) is a term or concept described in Jongejan’s Land en Volk van Atjeh Vroeger en Nu in relation to Aceh. Elementary Islamic education provided by a godsdienstonderwijzer in every gampong to children starting at age 6–7 (often later).

Description
Elementary Islamic education provided by a godsdienstonderwijzer in every gampong to children starting at age 6–7 (often later). Teaches Arabic script, then recitation of the Koran, basic faith doctrine, and the five daily prayers. Continues until age ~14 when the pupil has recited the entire Koran once or twice. Snouck Hurgronje: produces only that ‘adepts like parrots without understanding can recite what was revealed to the Prophet 13 centuries ago in Mecca’.
Significance
The term Koran-onderwijs is recorded by Jongejan as part of the cultural, administrative, or institutional vocabulary of Aceh.
