Description
Acehnese term for non-Muslim (especially the Dutch). ‘Kafirhaat’ (hatred of the infidel) was fuelled by oelama fanaticism. Snouck Hurgronje: ‘kafir-hatred, like any other passion, does not exclusively dominate a people; among a people like the Acehnese, various causes have made this hatred a habit, which however can be subdued by overmight and unlearned through prolonged intercourse.‘
Significance
The term Kafir / Kaphé is recorded by Jongejan as part of the cultural, administrative, or institutional vocabulary of Aceh.
