The G. Loser — modern Mount Loser — is the volcano (numbered 70 in the Bureau’s volcano list) of the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte, at 3,520 m the highest volcano of the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte and the source of the Lao Alas (Woi ni Agoesein). In the Bureau’s Sumatra survey (1917), the G. Loser is the principal volcano of the Wilhelmina gebergte’s northern edge, and the orographic source of the Alas river.

Orography

The Bureau’s Hoofdstuk I describes the G. Loser as the northernmost major peak of the Wilhelmina gebergte, standing at the Noordrand of the doorbraak of the Woi ni Tripö through the Westelijke Barisan coulisse. The Bureau notes that “de Lao Alas (Woi ni Agoesein) … op de Zuidelijke hellingen van den G. Loser (70) ontspringt, in Zuid-Oostelijke richting het Westelijke lengtedal doorstroomt.” The G. Loser is thus the orographic source of the Alas river — the river whose valley forms the southern approach to the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte.

The G. Loser stands at the Noordelijke edge of the Wilhelmina gebergte, opposite the Kembar (65) — the northernmost peak of the Wilhelmina gebergte proper — and at the southern limit of the Gajoesche Centraalgebergte. The G. Loser is thus the orographic bridge between the Wilhelmina gebergte and the Gajoesche Centraalgebergte.

Significance

The G. Loser is, in the Bureau’s Sumatra survey, the highest volcano of the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte and the orographic source of the Lao Alas. The Bureau’s emphasis on the G. Loser’s role as the source of the Alas river — and on its situation at the orographic bridge between the Wilhelmina gebergte and the Gajoesche Centraalgebergte — frames the G. Loser as the geographical foundation of the Alas valley’s southern hydrography, and as the strategic anchor of the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte’s orographic defence.

The G. Loser’s height — 3,520 m — makes it the highest volcano of the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte, and one of the highest volcanoes of Sumatra. The Bureau’s measurement is the principal evidence of the G. Loser’s orographic dominance of the central-Atjeh hoogvlakte.
