The Bahoe-bahoe — also written bahoe-bahoe — was the rank-vegetation swamp of the eastern coast of Sumatra, maintained by the seawater, which formed the characteristic coastal phenomenon of the region. The bahoe-bahoe is the principal obstacle to the construction of roads and railways along the eastern coast, and the principal source of the nipah-leaf, bark and firewood that the population extracts from it. The side-line of the Atjeh-tram from Langsa to Koeala Langsa runs through the bahoe-bahoe — ‘een heel gebied van morsigen plantengroei in moeras, dat het zeewater onderhoudt. Het is het overbekende kustvoorkomen op Sumatra, waaruit in menige streek de mensch met opoffering van een stuk gezondheid en levensduur toch weer zijn nut weet te halen door winning van hout, schors en nipah-blad.‘
