Apitan rimoeeng — the tiger-captain — was the Atjehnese nickname of the marechaussée officer Christoffel, who broke the post-pacification resistance in the hill-country of Keureuto about 1908 and was so called ‘omdat zijn greep bloedig was’ — because his grip was bloody. The title apitan rimoeeng places Christoffel in the same series as the ‘tijger van Atjeh’ Van Daalen himself, and is the principal nickname of the post-pacification marechaussée-captains.
