Customary rules of life that govern daily life in Aceh (as elsewhere in the archipelago). Constantly evolving; now influenced also by European law and religious regulation. The adat dominates marriage ceremonies — no marriage is valid unless all adat ceremonies are fulfilled. Includes adat-gebruiken, adat-voorschriften, adat-plechtigheden.
Significance
The term adat / adatrecht is recorded by Jongejan as part of the cultural, administrative, or institutional vocabulary of Aceh.
