A. al-hara was an Acehnese‑Malay lexical item listed on page 92 of the Malay translation of the Burda, glossed as “birahi jang volmaakte liefde” (perfect love, akin to the love that makes one die for the beloved). The term stems from the Arabic al‑ḥarāʾ (الحراء) meaning “desire” or “passion”. In Acehnese devotional poetry the word conveyed an ecstatic, self‑sacrificial love for the Divine.
Literary Usage
The term occurs in verses describing the lover’s yearning for God, echoing Sufi motifs of annihilation in love.
